The stats tell the story: in 10 East region starts in 2016, Ian Campbell has yet to finish outside the top-10.

Indeed, he has only finished lower than sixth on one occasion. Most importantly, the Cheshunt Park PGA Professional has three victories to his name, the latest of which came in the South Herts Pro-Am.

The Scot shot a fine five-under 67 that was good enough to secure victory by two shots from Mitch Kierstenson (The Shire).

Campbell, 36, said: “I have played nicely over the first half of the year. I’ve just been concentrating on rhythm and timing – trying to keep it simple. I’ve also been trying to use my practice time wiser and be more efficient with it.

“I think this has to be the most consistent start to a year I’ve had. I would have thought my scoring must be my lowest.”

At South Herts, Campbell notched an early eagle at the third hole and followed up immediately with a birdie. There was a rare blemish as a bogey arrived at the 13th but that served only to trigger three straight birdies from the next hole.

Kierstenson may have finished one closer if it wasn’t for a late dropped shot. But he can reflect with a good deal of satisfaction on what is his best finish of the season so far.

A similar comment applies to Daniel Field (East Herts) who finished with a flourish, making birdies at all of his final three holes. Field shot a one-under 71 to finish in a tie for third alongside Steve Cipa (South Essex Golf Centre), James Webber (Three Rivers G&CC), Brett Taylor (Brett Taylor Golf) and Ben Kerr (Bourn Golf & Leisure).
