Bathgate's Louis Gaughan achieved a top 20 finish in the Tartan Tour's inaugural P&H Championship at the Renaissance Club last year.

And he again showed his liking for the North Berwick course by leading the field in the 2016 event by a clear two shots after a splendid round of five-under-par 66.

Gaughan was runner-up in last year's Scottish Young Professionals' championship but, apart from that, he has not been much in the limelight.

This 54-hole tournament, with a field of 125, could change all that.

Gaughan birdied the long third, fifth, short sixth, seventh, 16th and 18th in halves of 33, on which the only blot was a bogey at the short ninth.

He leads by two from Ross Munro (Duddingston), Marc Owenson (Gullane) and Paul O'Hara (Clydeway Golf).

Graham Fox (Clydeway Golf), who tees up in the BMW PGA Championship on Thursday, is one of four players at two under par after a 69.

The huge field will be cut to the leading 40 and ties after the second round. If the first round scores are any guide, the cut should be around 148.
