Timbey serves up a feast for South Moor

Chef Neil Timbey Cooked up a winning recipe at the Staysure Trophy North qualifying event held at The Manchester Golf Club.

Timbey partnered South Moor Golf Club PGA professional Mark Ridley for the event - and the Durham-pair won by one point ahead of Abbeydale Golf Club’s Gareth Davies and Richard Stacey who edged second spot on countback.

Both teams now head to the showpiece Staysure Trophy Final which will be staged from July 31 to August 1 at the London Golf Club near Sevenoaks, Kent.

The pro-am competition sponsored by Staysure, the insurance specialists for over 50s, has been launched by the PGA this year is aimed at senior amateur players and carries a £30,000 prize fund.

And Timbey, aged 53, says he has landed the perfect job in terms of combining work with golf.

The 13-handicapper is the chef at South Moor and lives on the premises. 

“I can open the club up at 6am and be out on the course by 6.05, it’s quite handy,” he said.

“I have the franchise for South Moor Golf Club which is good. I also live there and that’s working well for me!”

Timbey who got off to an ideal start with a nett eagle at the first hole, followed by three birdies in the next four.

“Things started off very well for me, but then I got a got a bit nervous over the last few holes and Mark wouldn’t tell me, but he came in with back to back birdies on the last two,” explained Timbey.

“It’s a great competition and now we have a place in the final which is tremendous.”

Ridley said Timbey’s contribution at the start was crucial.

“He did all the damage, I thought it was great and that I could just sit back and watch,” said the South Moor professional.

“I played really well on the back nine with six birdies in the last 10 holes in all, I just kept it going. We started off like a house on fire and I finished it off.

“We were definitely taking the competition seriously, it’s something new to play in and Neil’s really looking forward to getting down to The London Club.”
